Building Financial Models That Actually Work

We started falmorient in 2018 because spreadsheets weren't cutting it anymore.

Financial modelling sounds technical and dry. But here's the thing—when you're making big decisions about investments, expansions, or resource allocation, you need numbers you can trust. Not just formulas. Not corporate jargon. Real frameworks that handle Australian market conditions and give you clarity when stakes are high.

How We Got Started

Back in 2018, our founding team was frustrated. We'd seen too many businesses make expensive mistakes because their financial projections were either overly optimistic or based on outdated assumptions. The gap between what consultants promised and what actually happened was massive.

So we asked ourselves: what if we taught people to build their own models? What if business owners and finance teams could create scenario analyses that reflected their actual market rather than generic templates?

That question led to falmorient. We're not a software platform—we're educators who believe financial literacy means knowing how to construct models from scratch, test assumptions rigorously, and communicate findings without the fluff.

What Makes Our Approach Different

01

Real Business Context

We don't teach abstract theory. Every module is grounded in actual scenarios—capital budgeting decisions, valuation negotiations, cash flow forecasting under uncertainty. You learn with data that mirrors what you'll encounter in practice.

02

Assumption Testing First

Most models fail because people don't stress-test their inputs. We train you to question growth rates, discount factors, and cost structures before you build anything. Critical thinking comes before technical execution.

03

No Proprietary Software Lock-In

You'll work in Excel, Python, and open-source tools. We believe you should own your skills—not depend on expensive subscriptions or black-box platforms that hide how calculations actually work.

The People Behind falmorient

We're a small team—two instructors who've spent years in corporate finance, investment analysis, and education. We're not here to scale rapidly or chase venture funding. We're here to teach well.

Linnea Thorsen, Lead Instructor

Linnea Thorsen

Lead Instructor

Linnea spent a decade doing valuations for mid-sized acquisitions before she realized she was better at teaching people how to build models than building them herself. She joined falmorient in 2019 and now leads our core curriculum development.

Vesna Kovalenko, Program Director

Vesna Kovalenko

Program Director

Vesna came from investment banking where she modelled infrastructure projects across Southeast Asia. She knows what it's like to present projections to sceptical stakeholders. Her teaching style is direct—no sugarcoating, no shortcuts.

Where We're Headed

Our next cohort starts in September 2025. We're keeping it small again—around 20 participants—because we want to maintain the quality of feedback and interaction that makes the program effective.

We're also developing advanced modules on probabilistic forecasting and Monte Carlo simulations. Not because they're trendy, but because uncertainty is real and businesses need better ways to quantify it.

If you're tired of templates that don't fit your situation, or consultants who disappear after delivering a 90-page deck, maybe we can help. We won't promise overnight expertise. But we will show you how to build models that hold up under scrutiny.
